There are a bunch of dirt bikes to choose from for your 9-year-old kid. They have different motors, frame sizes and flat out are built for different reasons.

You have trail dirt bikes and Motocross dirt bikes. Trail dirt bikes have lower seat height than a motocross dirt bike. A motocross dirt bike has a larger suspension and a more powerful motor.

There is also a significant price difference between a trail dirt bike and a race motocross dirt bike. The reason is the race dirt bike uses more expensive and higher quality parts on the bike to cope with the demands of racing.

Below is a list of a few of the differences that you need to think about when buying a dirt bike for your 9-year-old kid.

How to know what dirt bike is best for your 9-year-old kid

9-year-old beginner trail dirt bikes

Knowing what dirt bike to get started can be a challenge. If your 9-year-old is a beginner dirt biker you really should start with a semi-automatic transmission air-cooled 4 stroke dirt bike.  They are lower to the ground so they will feel more planted and safer. They also have motors that are built to go slower and ride around on trails. The suspension is also set up for slow riding and trails.

A lot of these dirt bikes come with electric start and a Kickstarter. The electric start is really nice when your 9-year-old is just getting started. They can operate and start their dirt bike easier without having to use the kick start.

Also, these trail dirt bikes are 4 stroke motors. This means you can put in normal pump gas and do not have to mix the gas like you do on a 2 stroke motor.

9-year-old motocross racing dirt bikes

If you want to get your kids into racing dirt bikes you have to get a dirt bike that will be competitive in the 9-year-old races. These dirt bikes usually have manual clutches, 2 stroke motors, and much larger suspension.

These kids’ dirt bikes are built for racing, which means they are fast and harder to ride. Your kid will be able to corner faster, jump higher, and stop faster than a trail dirt bike. I would not recommend a motocross dirt bike for your 9-year-old if they are a beginner. A kids race dirt bike will be scary and unsafe for a 9-year-old that is just learning to ride. You can always upgrade once your 9-year-old gets the hang of dirt biking.

These motocross dirt bikes for 9-year-olds are 2 stroke motors. This means you have to mix the gas and the 2 stroke oil before you add fuel to the tank. If you do not do these there will be NO LUBRICATION for the 2 stroke motor and you will end up ceasing the motor. Always consult the dirt bike owners manual on the proper fuel/oil mix ratio.

Semi-automatic dirt bikes for 9 year olds

A semi-automatic transmission is a transmission where they do not have a manual clutch. You still have gears that need to be shifted but do not have to use a clutch to engage and disengage the transmission. This type of transmission is found on the trail dirt bikes that we recommend your 9-year-old to start on if they are a beginner.

Even if your kid has been riding dirt bikes for a while and is a seasoned vet, if you plan on riding single track a trail bike might be a better option then a full-fledged race manual clutch dirt bike.

Manual clutch dirt bikes for 9 year olds

A manual clutch on a dirt bike means that you have a lever/clutch that needs to be pulled in or let to engage or disengage the transmission. This is similar to manual transmission in a car but you use a clutch lever instead of pushing in a clutch pedal.

A manual clutch allows you to modulate the power which helps the rider stay in motion and also optimizes the power. A manual clutch is for race dirt bikes and seasoned 9-year-old dirt bike riders. Generally, build for riding and racing on motocross tracks you can use these 2 stroke manual clutch dirt bikes for trail riding as well.
